Novel Room-Temperature Rechargeable Calcium-Ion Battery with High Performance
2018-06-18 13:21

Calcium-ion batteries show great promise as novel energy storage devices benefiting from the high natural abundance, relatively low reduction potential close to lithium and bivalent feature of calcium. However, the development of calcium-ion batteries has been hindered by the irreversible plating/stripping of calcium anode at room temperature.

Our group has developed a novel configuration for calcium-ion battery with Sn as anode and graphite as cathode, which could charge/discharge reversibly at room temperature associated with a new working mechanism. The as assembled calcium-ion battery exhibited high working voltage of 4.45 V and high cycling performance over 350 cycles with capacity retention over 95%.

This study, entitled "Reversible calcium alloying enables a practical room-temperature rechargeable calcium-ion battery with a high discharge voltage," was published online in Nature Chemistry.
